Large Gardens Smaller-Small Gardens Larger
Even if you have a large garden small is still beautiful.
Dividing the space up into a series of smaller more intimate “rooms” isn’t a new idea but is gaining popularity with “mature” gardeners and those who have opted for home entertainment for friends and business purposes.
Larger gardens may accommodate most of your wish list. Fancy some of these?

A secret garden where you can hide away for a quiet coffee and read of the morning paper or chat with a friend over a glass of wine while allowing the world to pass you by.
How about a sunny patio with comfortable outdoor furniture and lots of fragrant shrubs in containers? Build a small water feature for the sight and sound of running water. Perhaps you need the privacy and screening of a timber pergola where you can relax under trailing climbers drizzling down perfume or fruiting vines so that you may peel your own grapes!
An enclosed play area visible from the house and complete with sand pit and miniature garden may be on the list.
When deciding to divide up a large garden, pick the right spot for each feature. The barbecue area should be close to the patio that, in turn, should be in a sunny position.
Design the croquet lawn to be clear of overhanging trees that will cast shade and keep the grass wet.
The paths that join the “garden rooms” should meander through shrubbery rather than taking the shortest line from A to B.

If, on the other hand, you have a small garden don’t despair. There are ways to make it seem larger while utilizing every square cm. Include any vertical walls or fences in the design. Sunny walls are ideal for trained fruit trees.
In Gardening for Small Spaces I have covered balcony, roof top, basement, back yard and small gardens showing that in every case it is perfectly possible to have a stunning garden for relaxing, entertaining and for growing a wide selection of trees, shrubs, perennials, bulbs, climbers and especially fresh, tasty fruit and vegetables.
Privacy and shelter are top priorities and easy to achieve.
